Hip pain is a very general term used to report pain in the hip area. This should not be confused with sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain with is immediately below the low back and a couple inches to the side. The hip joint is the top of the thigh bone where it connects to the pelvis. People often feel hip pain referring or radiating into the groin area.
Pain in this area can be due to many different reasons. Some of the more common reasons are hip joint degeneration (mostly after the 4th or 5th decades of life), or soft tissue dysfunction (tendons, ligaments and/or muscles). These soft tissues often become irritated due to overuse and due to normal use when there is structural misalignment (abnormal hip/pelvic posture). We refer to these misalignments as “subluxations”. These subluxations force the hips and pelvis to function asymmetrically, leading to irritation of the soft tissues and over a long period of time, perhaps degeneration as well.
The first step to getting rid of hip pain is to find out what type of pain it is and why it is happening. In our offices this means taking Xrays of the hips and pelvis to more clearly identify the underlying problem.
